Western Suburbs Weightlifting
About Us
With the Support of VicHealth an Olympic Weightlifting Club has been established in the western suburbs. Registered as Western Suburbs Weightlifting Inc. and centred at the Maribyrnong Sports Academy, the club aims to promote Olympic Weightlifting to all levels of participation.
Weightlifting is an Olympic and Commonwealth Games sport and has participated in every Olympic Games since the inauguration of the Modern Olympics in 1896. Who can forget Dean Lukin's Olympic Gold and Robert Kabbas' silver medals in Los Angeles?
Western Suburbs Weightlifting believes that this is an opportunity to encourage residents of the western suburbs to realise the benefits of participating in regular competitive sport with an activity that already has widespread competitive and recreational participation.
In additional the sport weightlifting, with its emphasis on developing strength, agility, balance and coordination, has been shown to offer significant health benefits in maintaining good bone health, falls prevention, blood pressure and general everyday functional activity.
Recent research at Deakin University has highlighted the value of weightlifting training in enhancing the skeletal health and growth in both male and female adolescents
The establishment of this club is a joint initiative of the Western Suburbs Weightlifting, The Victorian Weightlifting Association, Maribyrnong Sports Academy and Vic Health and is in the Australian Sport Commission's Active Australia Program, which is committed to delivering successful sports programs, designed to increase participation in organised sport across all age groups at local, club and school levels.
